5 Ways to Keep Your Salon-Coloured Hair Healthy

Nothing beats the feeling of leaving the salon with freshly coloured hair...

You feel great, you look refreshed and you're ready to face the circuit of birthday parties, family gatherings and work meetings with your gorgeous new locks.

But, did you know that hair colour penetrates your precious locks with chemicals, leaving your hair prone to dryness, damage and breakage without proper care and maintenance?

Follow our top 5 tips to keep your salon-coloured hair healthy and glowing.

Don't wash your hair right away

Do not wash your hair for 72 hours AFTER you've freshly coloured your hair.

The chemical processing during hair colouring leaves the cuticles open for up to 3 days and therefore leaves them prone to damage. Hair dye chemically alters your hair structure meaning your hair is more porous and susceptible to damage.

Our recommendation is to hold off washing your hair for at least 72 hours after your colour appointment. You'll thank us later!

Use a salon grade shampoo + conditioner

The shampoo and conditioner you use is key in keeping your fresh hair colour from losing its vibrancy.

Colour-safe shampoos and conditioners maintain your hair colour and reduce unnecessary fading. Colour-safe hair care contains hydrating and nourishing ingredients that restore and repair your hair, rather than stripping out the colour.

Always ask your colourist to recommend a shampoo and conditioner that works best for your hair or purchase directly from the salon to ensure the highest quality formulation.

Avoid hot showers

Do you love a scalding hot shower?

Unfortunately, it might be affecting your hair colour as heat and steam open up the hair cuticle and cause the dye to bleed out.

This is also true for your heat styling tools such as curling irons, hair straighteners and blow dryers.

We always recommend using a thermal heat protectant hair serum or spray whenever you style your hair and whip out that sexy shower cap (yeah girl!) to protect your hair from steam between washes.

Deep condition your hair

One of the major issues with hair colour is the loss of moisture from your locks - combat this problem by using a deep conditioner on your hair once a week.

Apply the treatment to damp hair and comb it through from roots to tips. Pull your hair into a topknot and pin it into place or wrap it up in a towel and leave it to soak for 30 minutes. When you rinse it out, you'll notice softer, shinier and healthier hair.

Use an at-home toner

Colour naturally fades between professional appointments but using a professional toner at home will keep your hair looking healthy and vibrant.

Blondes benefit from a silver toner to remove brassy tones and brunettes can use a colour-tinted at-home gloss conditioner.

Using these types of treatments will brighten your locks and give you a fresh glow between your professional appointments. Ask your colourist about these options and they can mix up a take-home formulation for you.

Colour-treated hair looks beautiful but nothing is more frustrating than paying for a fresh colour only to have it fade within a week or so due to poor home maintenance.

Focus on maintaining moisture, protecting your hair from heat and using quality products.

By following our advice, your salon-coloured hair will look fresh and feel healthy between your professional colour appointments.
