Meet Sureni

Our Marketing Coordinator Maxim sat down with Senior Hairstylist + Colourist Sureni to find out more about why she become a hairstylist and colourist, her professional background, haircare advice and why she loves working at Synergy Hair Melbourne.

Why did you become a hairstylist and colourist?

I was inspired by my mum to become a hairstylist. She ran her own hair salon in Sir Lanka so from the get-go I’ve been amongst and immersed in the professional hair industry.

It’s only natural that I decided to qualify as a hairstylist and follow in my mum’s footsteps.

How long have you been a hairdresser?

I first started out as a hairdresser in 2008 as an apprentice in Sri Lanka. I worked in that role for 5 years and then decided to make the massive move to Australia in 2013!

I started off in Perth for a few years after which I made another huge move, this time to London for two years.

Now, I’ve moved to Melbourne continuing to do what I love as I have done for the last 14 years.

What’s one piece of hair advice everyone needs to know?

I tell every client who walks through the doors at Synergy Hair Melbourne that they only need to wash their hair once a week, definitely no more than twice a week.

Washing your hair too frequently strips your scalp and hair of sebum, which leaves your hair feeling dry, brittle and prone to serious breakage.

So take it from me - only wash your hair once a week and also ensure when you are washing your hair, that you use a salon-grade shampoo and conditioner - it makes a HUGE difference!

How would your clients describe you in three words?

Ooh, great question!

I would say my clients describe me as consistent, professional and friendly.

Three things that all clients look for when trusting a stylist and colourist with their hair.

What is your earliest beauty memory?

My earliest beauty memory and the memory which still fuels my artistry day-to-day is of my first boss.

She was a woman in her mid-60s who carried herself so impeccably well. She always looked her best and has continued to inspire me to look my best every day.

She also taught me the importance of backing yourself, never giving up and pushing the limits in hair styling and colouring.

What’s your proudest hair moment so far?

There have definitely been heaps over my 14 years in hair styling, but without a doubt, my proudest hair moments are on a daily basis when I achieve my client’s desired cut, colour and style.

The way it makes them feel, look and radiate is the reason why I’ve chosen hair as my career.

It’s what gets me out of bed in the morning!

What do you do for fun outside of Synergy Hair Melbourne?

Out of the salon, you’ll find me being pretty social and going out for dinners with my friends.

I also love to keep really fit, so you’ll also find me at the gym, cooking healthy food as well as ending most days watching a new series on Netflix!

What do you enjoy most about working at Synergy Hair Melbourne?

I absolutely love working with my colleagues Anna Marie and Kelly.

The salon environment is really warm, friendly and a great place to work. I have also built great relationships with my clients who I absolutely adore.

We’re always on the lookout for talented hairdressers both senior and junior. Check out our careers page here to learn more about the team!

What’s a hair myth you want to bust here and now?

Oh my gosh, there are so many, I hear the craziest things!

But, it would have to be the myth around extremely long hair not being beautiful.

As someone with naturally very long hair, I can tell you with 100% certainty that long hair is and always will be beautiful.
