Meet Kelly

Our Marketing Coordinator Maxim sat down with our hairdressing apprentice Kelly to discover why she decided to become a hairdresser, her earliest beauty memory, why she loves working at Synergy Hair Melbourne and what she does for fun outside of the salon.

Why did you decide to start a hairdressing apprenticeship?

I’ve ALWAYS had a passion for hair but I started my career as a makeup artist. While I really loved working in makeup, my true passion is hair.

So I thought, it’s now or never and took the deep dive into a hair apprenticeship.

It’s the best choice I’ve made.

What’s one piece of hair advice everyone needs to know?

Always use a salon-grade shampoo and conditioner, particularly if you have coloured your hair.

Some regular hair care products, particularly from the supermarket, can strip your hair and wash away your colour.

For that reason, I recommend salon hair care as essential if you’re serious about caring for your scalp and hair.

How would your clients describe you in three words?

I’m confident that my clients would describe me as colourful (hello, I have purple hair!), friendly and efficient.

What is your earliest beauty memory?

My mum was a hairdresser and my earliest beauty memory is of her doing perms in our kitchen when I was younger.

It’s this memory that kickstarted my passion for hair artistry and I’m so proud to be following in her footsteps.

What’s your proudest hair moment so far?

My proudest hair moment by far would be having the courage to take the leap and start my career in hair artistry with my apprenticeship.

Already it’s been an interesting and wild ride - a ride I’ve loved every second of.

I’m excited to create new hair moments which I’ll look back on in the next few years and see how far I’ve come.

What’s your go-to hair care product and why?

Like Anna Marie, my go-to hair care product is K18.

With the support of Anna and Sureni, I do the majority of keratin smoothing treatments here at Synergy Hair Melbourne. As our keratin specialist, I recommend K18 as it works by reconnecting and repairing broken keratin chains whilst restoring hair resilience.

The results are incredible and many of my clients are blown away with how soft, smooth, strong and bouncy it leaves their hair.

What do you do for fun outside of Synergy Hair Melbourne?

Outside of the salon, you’ll find me spending time with my friends and family, visiting galleries (I adore art), making cocktails, travelling and taking photos, as well as restoring dolls.

What do you enjoy most about working at Synergy Hair Melbourne?

I absolutely love working with Anna Marie and Sureni, not only am I learning everything about cutting, styling and colour - but they’re also great energy and make work really enjoyable.

We’re always looking for new hairstylists and colourists, I’d recommend checking out our careers page.

What’s a hair myth you want to bust here and now?

I’ve only just started my career however what strikes me is how many women over 40 and 50 tone down their look or choose more conservative cuts, colours and styles instead of experimenting with their hair.

I’ve even heard the phrase ‘mutton dressed as lamb’ thrown around and I cannot stand this saying.

Women don’t need to tone down their look, they need to embrace what makes them unique and there’s no better way to express yourself than through your hair!
